Ecological & Organic Agriculture
Welcome to the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension’s Web Pages for Ecological and Organic Agriculture
We provide technical support for crop and livestock producers practicing ecological agriculture and to those interested in learning about ecological and organic agriculture in New Hampshire.
What is Ecological Agriculture?
Ecological agriculture depends on cultural practices such as crop rotation, cover cropping, biological pest control, and composting to maintain soil fertility and prevent the buildup of pests and diseases.
What is Organic Agriculture?
USDA-certified organic producers practice ecological agriculture. Organic certification also prohibits the use of synthetic fertilizers and synthetic pesticides, plant growth regulators, livestock feed additives, and genetically modified organisms. Those interested in learning more about becoming a certified organic producer should contact the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture’s Division of Regulatory Services
