Funding Available for Woodcock Habitat Management Projects
Woodcock Habitat Management - New Funding Available - Posted December, 2007
There is a new financial assistance program available to assist northern New England landowners who are interested in creating, enhancing and maintaining early-successional habitat for wildlife. The Wildlife Management Institute has assembled a coalition of 32 public and private conservation entities to halt the decline of American Woodcock populations, as part of the recently developed Northern Forest Woodcock Initiative.
About the funding
- Funding is available for public and private landowners who own at least 25 acres
- Woodcock are the target species of this funding so projects need to be designed so woodcock habitat is improved - this can often be done on a variety of projects that create/maintain/enhance a full range of field, old-field, and early-successional habitats for many other wildlife species.
- Funds can be used to provide the landowner's portion of other cost-share programs such as WHIP and EQUIP or the funds can be used to cover all or most of the cost of the project alone.
- There are a large amount of funds currently available, so no project is too small or large for consideration.
- There are no stipulations requiring landowners keep their land open to hunting or to any other public recreation.
- Approval process is nearly immediate after a site visit with the landowner - landowners will know if they can/can't get funding and how much they qualify for.
- Upon completion of project, landowner submits invoice to WMI and is reimbursed within a couple of weeks.
- Contact UNHCE Wildlife staffers Matt Tarr (862-3594, matt.tarr@unh.edu) or Emma Carcagno (862-2512, emma.carcagno@unh.edu) to discuss the proposed project. If the project can benefit woodcock, your project will get a site visit with experts to provide recommendations and plan the project with you.
